Ag Experience Internships

MFA internships provide hands-on learning about careers that interest you.

MFA’s paid summer internship is designed to challenge, educate and inspire college students pursuing careers in agriculture, business and communications.

Apply for an internship

The MFA Ag Experience provides unique internships tailored to each student’s degree program and personal interests.

Students are paired with a summer mentor who directs, challenges and teaches them about our company and their area of the business. Each mentor also outlines a summer-long project for their student to complete and present at the conclusion of the summer.

To be eligible, applicants must be working toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university, be a full-time student in good standing with a grade point average above 2.75 and have completed their sophomore year of college. MFA actively recruits interns through college career fairs each fall. See our current list of events below. Interested in applying? Application period is Sept. 1 through Nov. 1 each year.

Featured intern: Meet Addie Thessen

“I am a big believer that you can learn more in the field than in a classroom, and I would say that has definitely been true this summer.”

Adeline Thessen of Taos, Missouri, worked in MFA’s Precision Agronomy Department in the summer of 2023. A student at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Adeline is working toward a degree in plant science with an emphasis in crop management. She is also double minoring in agriculture systems technology and agriculture business. Her internship project involves working with spray drones, testing the amount of spray that is getting down into the crop canopy at a specific height and speed. She has done several test flights and says the outcome has been positive. Adeline says MFA has provided her with several skills, and she pinpoints agronomy knowledge as the most important. “I have never really gotten to see the research side of things before,” she says, adding that her internship has given her experience in mapping out and reading research plots and looking at stages of corn and beans. Her advice to future interns is, “Show up on time, don’t be lazy, and work hard. You could have stepped into a role and have absolutely no idea what any of it was, but as long as you are teachable and willing to learn, that will take you further in life than any knowledge you bring into any job.”

Featured intern: Meet Jack Payne

“First and foremost, recognize the fact that you don’t know everything you think you know.”

Jack Payne of San Antonio, Texas, worked in the Sales Department under Jason Worthington in the summer of 2023. A student at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Jack is working toward a degree in agriculture business. His MFA internship project involves identifying different brands that go into every sale: the customer brand, company brand and employer brand. He said his favorite part is getting to travel around Missouri, see different MFA locations, visit small towns and experience several different positions within the company, including managers, precision specialists, sales staff, seed specialists, agronomists and everything in between. “These opportunities are helping me gain the technical knowledge of the products and how to talk to customers,” Jack said. “I am learning how to talk to people the right way to close a deal and ask the right questions.” Jack said he chose MFA because he wanted to work for a company that values the farmer and operates with honesty and integrity. He said working for a farmer-owned cooperative was especially attractive to him. Jack’s advice to future interns is, “Coming in, I thought I had a solid knowledge base when it came to agriculture. Pretty much from the get-go, I realized very quickly that there is still a lot I must learn, and I’ll get to have fun learning something I didn’t know. That is the moment when I got to fall in love with agriculture all over again.”

Featured intern: Meet Victoria Washburn

"If you are willing to learn, that’s going to take you a long way in life."

Victoria Washburn of King City, Missouri, worked in the Communications Department this summer. She was tasked with “telling MFA’s story” through her project, which involved creating and building an Ag Experience recruitment video. A student at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Victoria, is pursuing a degree in agriculture communications with a minor in journalism. When asked about her favorite part about working for MFA, she said, “I have been able to travel around with each intern and experience a little bit about every department. They’ve shared their knowledge about what they’ve learned this summer with me.” Victoria says one of the reasons she chose MFA is because the internship was truly meant to be an “experience.” “Coming in, MFA’s mentors sit down and have a meeting with you and ask what your interests are,” she explained. “Then they developed my project around those interests.” Victoria advises future interns, “Be confident in knowing that it is okay to ask questions and ask for more. They’re all here to help you and push you to become better.”

Spend summer in the field

Crop-Trak interns learn importance of our precision scouting program

A special group of MFA Ag Experience interns are those who work with our Crop-Trak precision scouting program. These interns spend their summer visiting growers’ fields in their assigned districts, checking for pests, diseases and fertility issues while learning from MFA’s agronomists and precision specialists.

Why MFA’s Ag Experience?

Throughout the summer, the students will gain valuable, hands-on experience within the industry and collaborate with MFA and its members. Overall, the goal is for interns to apply their knowledge and skills to a real-world setting.

Yes, paid! We realize many internships are not, but MFA values the time and energy that our Ag Experience participants put into their summer job.

Each intern is paired with an MFA mentor who helps create a customized internship geared toward the student’s interests and career objectives.

Each intern is given responsibility for a specific project that will contribute to the company in his or her particular focus area. At the program’s conclusion. all interns will give a final presentation detailing their projects and experiences to senior-level managers.

Not only do Ag Experience participants network with MFA executives, other employees and fellow interns, but they also have several opportunities to make connections throughout the agricultural industry during their 12-week internship.
