Raise ‘em right

MFA can provide the nutrition and expertise you need to maximize poultry potential.

No matter what type of operation you have, following best management practices will ensure your birds have the best possible chance to perform at their maximum potential. Start by selecting the right breed. Research is key. Are you getting chickens to supply eggs, meat, or both? Keep the water source clean, fresh, and changed daily. Provide a safe coop with adequate lighting and a clean, dry pen for baby birds to grow. Change their bedding regularly. Bedding should be absorbent and surfaces not slick. Supplemental heat will be needed for young chicks. Follow instructions and precautions on heat sources. Watch chicks to determine if more or less heat is needed. Chicks can smother by piling up to stay warm or in corners to get away from too much heat. In general, start at 90 degrees and lower the temperature by 5 degrees each week until the chicks are 5 weeks old (70 degrees). Also, regularly check your coop for signs of damage or loose areas of fencing to help protect your flock from predators. An enclosed pen protects them from coyotes, stray dogs, foxes, and other animals. When it comes to animal health and nutrition, be sure to control insect and parasite infestations. And invest in quality feed, such as MFA’s trusted line of poultry products. MFA diets are properly balanced. Poultry grain or hen scratch is not a complete diet and should be used with a proper supplement. Grit should be available to young birds to assist in maintaining a healthy digestive tract.
