Precision agriculture may be more commonly associated with row-crop production, but forages often have the highest opportunity for returns when using practices such as variable-rate nutrient application. In fact, hay and pasture acres consistently have more variable fertility than crop fields. Producers need to replace the nutrients removed through grazing and haying, but a shotgun approach isn’t the most efficient way. Cattle do put some of those nutrients back, but they don’t apply them evenly because they tend to gather around waterers, feeders and shade. Those areas have high fertility levels, while areas that have the best potential for forage production tend to be deficient. Nutri-Track is designed to help that uneven distribution of nutrients by managing soil fertility acre by acre with grid sampling and variable-rate application. Digging deeper into soil health
New testing service goes beyond fertility to focus on biology
With the recent push to promote regenerative agriculture and climate-smart programs, farmers need to measure the health of their soils to see the impact of those practices. Typical soil tests don’t provide that type of measurement. To meet those needs, MFA is now offering a new soil health testing service through its Crop-Trak Complete and Nutri-Track precision agriculture programs.
MFA’s soil health reports provide details such as microbial activity, soil respiration, nutrient availability, water-extractable carbon and nitrogen, and aggregate stability—the ability of a soil to regulate the movement and storage of air and water throughout the soil profile. The more stable the soil’s aggregates, the more productive the soil.
Growers who request soil health tests will also receive standard measurements of macro- and micronutrients and key factors such as pH and organic matter. Ultimately, an overall soil health score is calculated based on a combination of these different indicators. Once the results are available, MFA specialists will interpret the data and provide recommendations to improve the soil health profile if needed. From harvest and variable planting maps to nutrient management plans, the precision information you need is at your fingertips and as close as your mobile device or desktop computer. The MFA Agronomy Dashboard is a downloadable app for iPhone or iPad. A web-based version is available for desktop use and for non-Apple mobile devices via a web browser like Google Chrome.
