Feeding horses is not only a science but also an art. The science is knowing the nutritional requirements of the horse and blending various feedstuffs into a well-balanced ration. The art is knowing how to feed each horse for best performance. Proper nutrition is essential for maintenance, growth, reproduction and performance. The nutritional needs of each horse will vary according to its demands. For best results, horses should be kept in thrifty condition. Overfeeding can be as harmful as underfeeding. Though feed cost is the major expense for most horse operations, rations need not be expensive to provide good nutrition. The average horse feed will contain most of the nutrients required, but many owners tend to over-supplement and create imbalances in their horse rations. Horses are forage-consuming animals, so a good starting place in your feeding program is to have good pasture and/or hay. Grain and supplements are added when forage cannot alone meet nutritional needs. All horses should receive the proper daily supply of MFA Horse Mineral and fresh, clean water. In addition, parasite control, dental care, adequate exercise, preventative medicine, weather and work conditions are all basic to successfully managing horses.

Exceltra is a premium feed designed for horses of all ages, with enhanced levels of carbohydrates for growing, showing and working equine. The extruded pellet formulation has a beet pulp base and contains low levels of sugars and starches to assist metabolic disorders and excitable horses. This 16% protein feed has chelated minerals and high lysine to help rapidly growing foals develop strong bones and muscle tissue. Foals can start nibbling Strut-N-Shine at 2 months old. Feed up to 1 pound per month of age for best results. Creep-fed goals tend to have fewer intestinal problems at weaning and outgain herd mates that aren’t creep-fed until after weaning.

The Tribute line includes prebiotics, probiotics and optimum levels of antioxidants specifically formulated to meet your horse’s needs. Tribute products have low levels of starch, sugar and non-structural carbohydrates (NSC).
