Made for Agriculture co-hosts Adam Jones and Cameron Horine do a deep dive into Soybean Cyst Nematodes and related challenges with the disease in soybean fields. MFA Crop-Trak agronomists Scott Wilburn, Kevin Moore and Jesse Surface discuss what they’ve seen in grower fields and the effects of the disease, testing and its management.
Show Notes - SCN - Soybean Cyst Nematode Podcast #78
Made for Agriculture co-hosts Adam Jones and Cameron Horine do a deep dive on Soybean Cyst Nematode and the related challenges that come with the disease in soybean field. MFA Crop-Trak agronomists Scott Wilburn, Kevin Moore and Jesse Surface discuss what they’ve seen in grower fields and the effects of the disease, testing and its management
The agronomist discuss the growth of SCN as a problem and what related conditions that are caused by the pest in fields. They discuss ways to reduce numbers in the field through rotation and other management to deal with this worm that is classified as a disease because it is a vector for so many diseases and other pest .
2 min - Kevin Moore gives a summary of SCN and how they came to the US along with soil from overseas when inoculating for specific nitrogen creating bacteria. The team discusses host plants.
9 min - Scott talks about management and experiences with pulling tests for the pest. Has never sampled a field without a population, usually much higher than management threshold. Make sure to take a composite sample since populations vary in the field.
14 min - estimated losses in fields from research in bushels
16 mins - Cameron talks on Soybean hybrid resistance - PI 88788 gene and Peking genes, new gene research at MU on SCN.
22 min - Discussion on rotations, crop oscillations on field for population limits.
30 min - Jesse surface talks about different methods his producers use to manage different nematodes in the boothill including Seed treatments, resistance rotation and use of seed treatments.
33 min - Mitigation, control including Biological products and fungicides
36 min - Jesse talks about root knot nematode problems in the boothill and mid south sandy soil growing areas that rotate soybeans, cotton and even peanut rotation helps lower the numbers of nematodes.
