The MFA PowerCalf program is a whole herd approach to raising healthy, high-quality calves that perform well in the feedyard and are profitable on the rail.
The MFA PowerCalf program is a whole herd approach to raising healthy, high-quality calves that perform well in the feedyard and are profitable on the rail. MFA Health Track director Mike John has collected data on calves for 15 years. He has found that specific health and nutrition protocols result in a limited number of sick calves and higher performance in the feedyard. The new PowerCalf program utilizes high-quality feed & mineral products, proven herd health protocol and complete data collection, enabling producers to make profitable management decisions for their herd.
At the 2015 Beef Innovators seminar, MFA staff explained how the elements of the PowerCalf program work together and what information producers can capture through data collection. MFA range & pasture specialist David Moore shared tips on pasture weed control and options to maximize forage through quality pasture management. He discussed when to spray for various weeds and recommended products designed for effective weed control. Guest speaker Duane Gangwish talked about the Reputation Feeder Cattle program, developed by Verified Beef. This program serves as a third-party audit that provides data on genetic merit, calf management, age & source.
