Don’t let your fields turn into a weed nightmare

Take action now to protect your fields — and your peace of mind

They're lurking beneath the surface … waiting to strike. Weeds. They’re relentless, growing fast and overtaking your fields like an unstoppable nightmare. But you can control weeds before they rise. Residual herbicides this spring act like a shield, preventing weeds from emerging and turning your fields into nightmare.

If weeds weren’t scary enough, herbicide resistance is another frightening problem. Waterhemp, for example, has shown evolving tolerance to many major herbicide sites of action that we use to manage weeds in row crops. We’re seeing resistance become more complex, requiring us to take weed management up a notch. Farmers have been managing this resistance by returning to soil residual herbicides. Mixing multiple modes of action in the spray tank and overlapping those residuals have been excellent strategies.

However, some waterhemp populations in the U.S. are breaking through certain residual herbicides with a different type of resistance—metabolic resistance.

Like human metabolism breaks down food, plant metabolism also processes substances, in this case, herbicides. In weeds that have developed metabolic resistance, the herbicide’s active ingredients are broken down into nontoxic byproducts that don’t kill the plant.

Metabolic resistance in weeds is not widespread, but the true extent is unclear. Researching herbicide resistance is a labor-intensive process that involves sampling and collecting seeds from suspected fields and evaluating them under greenhouse conditions. Regardless, producers and agronomic advisors need to be aware of metabolic resistance and what it could mean for their weed management program when they encounter it.

NEW - Gold Advantage Boost Seed Treatment System unlocks more available nitrogen for top soybean performance

Introducing three new ways to boost your yield.

Nitrogen is the most overlooked nutrient in soybean production. Soybeans must take in 5.5 pounds of nitrogen for every bushel of yield, nearly four times what corn requires. That means a 60-bushel soybean crop requires around 330 pounds of nitrogen. One of the biggest misconceptions is that the soybean plant’s natural nitrogen-fixing inoculum is sufficient to meet these needs. It is not.

MFA’s Gold Advantage Seed Treatment System provides the potential to unlock more available nitro-gen and boost yields by promoting earlier, more robust and longer-lasting soybean nodules that feed the plant for top performance. This is done in three ways.

First, Gold Advantage delivers more advanced inoculum strains than the soybean plant’s native Bradyrhizobia, the organism that creates nodules and produces nitrogen. Coating the seed ensures populations are sufficient to colonize the root system.

Second, the treatments introduce a compound produced by soybeans to signal the need for nodulation before the plant can produce the signal compound itself. This leads to earlier nodule formation.

Third, the system adds essential micronutrients that feed rhizobia in close proximity and availability to soybean seedling roots. This encourages strong establishment and growth right from the start.

Contains essential micronutrients, soybean flow aid and lipochitooligosaccharides (LCO) signal compound for earlier, more productive and longer-lasting nodule production.

Contains advanced strains of Bradyrhizobia bacteria and the LCO signal compound for earlier, more productive and longer-lasting nodule production.

Combines the components and benefits of both Micro and Rhizo in one complete system.

Foliars that fit

MFA offers its own Gold Advantage foliar micronutrients tailored to the needs of row-crop farmers. These precision foliar products are designed to help farmers achieve high yields for corn, soybeans and small grains. Foliar fertilizer applications are intended to be a complement to a comprehensive soil fertility program.

Gold Advantage Trend-B provides serious results. This foliar-fed, slow-release nitrogen is combined with boron to provide targeted nutrition when the plant needs it the most. Trend-B works in synergy with fungicide to promote plant growth and stress tolerance, resulting in more gain with higher N efficiency. The benefits of fungicide are proven, but adding more nitrogen over the top provides an even better return. Trend-B not only adds the small amount of available N necessary to help a fungicide improve plant performance, but it also helps maintain optimal boron nutrition, which is often needed late in the season. Unlike many plant nutrients, boron is very mobile in the soil but not in the plant. Adding boron to a foliar application reduces its need to move from the soil through the plant. Trend-B contains:

NITROGEN (N)

  • Essential for plant growth, development  and reproduction
  • Needed throughout the growth cycle, especially  from V8-VT
  • Increases duration of photosynthesis
  • Critical for kernel development and ear-fill

BORON (B)

  • Essential for the growth of pollen tubes
  • Critical for seed and cell wall formation
  • Promotes maturity
  • Necessary for sugar translocation

Gold Advantage Complete is a foliar micronutrient package designed for high-yield soybean, corn and small grain production. Gold Advantage Complete can be combined with a foliar fungicide application, an insecticide application or a tank mix of both. The correct timing of this prescription nutrition package will let your crops express their full genetic potential. Gold Advantage Complete contains:

BORON (B)

  • Essential for the growth of pollen tubes
  • Critical for seed and cell wall formation
  • Promotes maturity
  • Necessary for sugar translocation

MANGANESE (Mn)

  • Aids in chlorophyll synthesis
  • Increases the availability of P and Ca
  • Serves as an activator for at least 35 different enzymes

MOLYBDENUM (Mo)

  • Required to form the enzyme which converts N in the plant to a useable form
  • Aids in the formation of legume nodules
  • Aids in the conversion of P in the plant to a more useable form

ZINC (Zn)

  • Aids plant growth hormones and enzyme systems
  • Necessary for carbohydrate and starch formation
  • Aids in the formation of seed IRON (Fe)
  • Promotes the formation of chlorophyll
  • Acts as an oxygen carrier
  • Critical in the reactions involving cell division and elongation

SULFUR (S)

  • Integral part of amino acids
  • Helps develop enzymes and vitamins
  • Promotes nodule formation on legumes
  • Helps in chlorophyll formation
  • Aids in seed production
