Why do my cattle need mineral supplementation?

Know what nutrients are required for optimum performance for every season

Minerals that are needed in relatively large amounts are called major or macro elements. They are calcium, phosphorus, salt (sodium and chlorine), magnesium, potassium and sulfur. Minerals needed in small amounts are micro or trace minerals, such as iron, zinc, manganese, copper, iodine, cobalt and selenium. Age, sex and stage of production influence the need for mineral supplementation. The mineral composition of forages is also a factor. Producers must also take into consideration the differences in availability of minerals in feed and their metabolic function. Some minerals are interrelated and must be in the proper ratio in the ration. Vitamins are also needed in very small quantities but are essential for good health, growth, maintenance, reproduction and production. Water‐soluble vitamins present in many natural feedstuffs and manufactured by the rumen bacteria are adequate enough quantity to meet animals’ needs. Vitamins A and E are the only ones that need to be supplemented for cattle and sheep under normal conditions.

MFA Mineral Line

Selecting the right mineral supplement is important for maintaining healthy cattle, achieving optimal growth and enhancing reproductive efficiency. Minerals and vitamins are necessary for practically all metabolic functions in cattle. Deficiencies may result in poor performance, deformities in growth and even death. Your MFA livestock expert can help select the right minerals for your operation’s needs. Find the MFA location nearest you here.

Ricochet supplies highly bioavailable forms of essential minerals along with MFA Shield Technology to improve colostrum, immunity and animal performance when fed to cows 60 days prior to calving and for 60 days after calving. Feeding Ricochet year-round is successful without using a different high-magnesium mineral in the fall-summer or a breeder mineral for the breeding season. The levels of fortification in Ricochet products make it a superior breeder mineral. Ricochet is available nonmedicated and in a medicated formula to control hornflies.
