With all this work. many farmers felt they were too busy to book seed in a timely manner. Although seed production was good both in MorCorn and MorSoy, MFA has run low on some of our popular hybrids and soybean numbers.

This is why some of our progressive producers book seed early (before harvest) and then make adjustments after harvest. There is no magic in seed production. Most seed companies know what they have to sell based on acres planted in the spring. Most retail seed salespeople have formed opinions on what hybrids and soybeans work in their area. You will have a new variety that will stand out every year, but for the most part, our seed portfolio had to be chosen last year at this time.

As far as making adjustments, after harvest is really no problem. MFA is a large company and can handle the changes. Let’s say you planted a hybrid on a certain farm and it did not perform as well as you expected. Our MFA seed salesperson can substitute a different hybrid in its place with no problem.

The second thing some of our more progressive farmers are doing is planting a portfolio of both MorCorn and MorSoys. As many of you have heard me say, I can tell you what won plots this year but I can’t tell you what will win next year. By planting a portfolio of products you spread your risk and will average more bushels per acre.
